NGWATHE LAUNCHED LOCAL AIDS COUNCIL
Ngwathe Local Municipality stakeholders, met at Parys town hall to establish the Local Aids Council. According to Executive Mayor, Cllr Joey Mochela, ‘’The stakeholders, in the form of sports fraternity, religious fraternal, disability sector, community policing forums, traditional healers, SANCA, school governing bodies, NAAC, community health structures, community works program, early childhood development practitioners, arts and culture forums, orphanage centers, health practitioners, taxi associations, and many other strategic civil society formations, gathered under one roof and formed Ngwathe Local AIDS Council’’
‘’This launch was to re-affirm our collective commitment as the ANC-led municipality to scale-up and intensify the multi-sectoral response to HIV/AIDS as it remains major challenge facing South Africa today and continue to affect the lives of our people especially in Ngwathe Local Municipality. In order to combat HIV/AIDS, a collective and multi-prolonged effort is required. As we remember President Oliver Tambo, we also appreciate to work of Tata Nelson Mandela. In his last years, frail as he was, Nelson Mandela became one of the world’s most important and effective campaigners against HIV/Aids’’
The fundamental functions of the Ngwathe Local HIV/AIDS Council, chaired by the Executive Mayor, shall be, inter alia:
Advice the municipality, on policy issues related to HIV/AIDS and recommend appropriate research to inform the needs and impact of local responses to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, provide guidance on the implementation of the HIV/AIDS Local Plan as well as other related plans, mobilize resources for the implementation of plans and strengthen partnership with all stakeholders, monitor and evaluate the implementation of HIV/AIDS related programs, develop programmes to coincide with important international and national HIV/AIDS calendar, for example World Aids day and so forth.
